A former Kansas law enforcement officer accused of stealing a gun from a local sheriff's department has been arrested.
Wilson County Sheriff officials say David Lumley, 65, turned himself in last week after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was booked into jail on a misdemeanor theft charge and is currently free on a $2,500 bond.
Officials say last year Lumley, who was working as a deputy for the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department at the time of the alleged crime, was accused of stealing a handgun from the Wilson County Sheriff's Department while he was there assisting with a local case.
Greenwood County Sheriff Rusty Bitler says the Kansas Bureau of Investigation notified his office of the accusation against Lumley shortly after the alleged theft occurred. Bitler says the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department is currently assisting the KBI with their investigation.
Bitler says Lumley resigned from his position after he learned he was under investigation and was not working for a law enforcement agency at the time of his arrest. He says Lumley worked as a sheriff's deputy for both Greenwood and Wilson counties for several years.
Bitler says the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department is very disappointed in the situation. He says they continue to cooperate fully with the KBI's investigation.
