Five young children are in police protective custody after they were abandoned by their mother and handed over to a homeless man.
Wichita Police say it began three weeks ago when the mother left her children with a complete stranger and ended when the man brought them to a Wichita QuikTrip.
Ashton Cody was working at the QuikTrip on South Broadway Tuesday afternoon when a man came in asking to use the phone.
'He said a lady tried to give her five kids to him, she was like, I'm done with them, I'm tired of them."
With her help, the homeless man called 911. Within minutes police arrived.
"I was just shocked. We have some homeless come in and when I saw the cops, I was shocked. I've never seen anything like that, just like him."
The police report says the woman abandoned her kids with the stranger three weeks ago, telling him she would return. When she didn't the man didn't know what to do. Seeing the "Safe Place" sign at the QuikTrip, he brought them there.
The kids, ranging in age from infant to 7-years-old, were taken into protective custody. It's not clear where the homeless man was caring for the kids for the past three weeks.
