Wichita Fire investigators are still working to determine what sparked a grass fire that spread to a nearby home in West Wichita and caused significant damage.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of N. Joann, near Douglas and West Street. Investigators now say the fire caused around $50,000 dollars in damage.

A vacant home will be a total loss following a fire Sunday afternoon in W. Wichita.

Battalion Chief Kevin Royce says the first crews to arrive on scene in the 100 block of N. Joann found a grass fire that had spread to the home. Firefighters also had to contend with a downed power line in the yard which hampered efforts until Westar Energy crews arrived to deactivate it.

The fire spread to a nearby tri-plex. The electrical meters were extremely damaged but Westar is in the process of repairing them and the and residents will be allowed to return home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Chief Royce says the extreme drought conditions and the wind help spread the fire.

"The wind was really not our ally today and we're lucky we kept it to just one home." Said Royce.

Damage is estimated at $70,000.

Wichita firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire in W. Wichita Sunday afternoon.

It happened shortly after 3 p.m. in the 100 block of N. Joann near 2nd and West Street. When crews arrived on scene they found fire had spread from the yard of the home up into the siding.

Crews had to deal with a downed power line in the yard and a gas meter that caught on fire. No injuries have been reported.
