WICHITA, Kan. — An abandoned apartment building caught fire in downtown Wichita early Wednesday, only one block from the site of a similar fire in early June.
Two alarms had to be called to bring things under control around 1:00 a.m. at Main and Lewis. Crews eventually found the problem on a corner of the second floor of the three-story building. But the building is long, which made it difficult for firefighters to track down exactly where the trouble was.
The damage was limited to one apartment unit. But the cause is unclear, because the apartment building is boarded and has no electricity.
"I'd be guessing, but there's homeless people that actually live in these buildings," Deputy Fire Chief Tammy Snow told reporters. "The majority of the time, they find ways in and out."
Snow added no one was found inside the building.
A similar fire erupted June 6 at an abandoned apartment building one block away, at Market and Lewis.
