WICHITA, Kan. -- A series of grass fires delayed Wichita firefighters from responding to an apartment fire Thursday.
Crews were called to Pelican Point apartment complex in the 2100 block of North Meridian around 6:30 p.m.
The fire started on a charcoal grill on a balcony and caused $300,000 damage. Fourteen residents were displaced.
The closest fire station is one mile away, but those crews were out fighting grass fires. A crew from Station 1 in downtown Wichita had to respond to the apartment fire.
Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Rich Harris says the wind helped the fire get out of control quickly.
Volunteers from the Red Cross were on scene to assist displaced residents.
