WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita firefighters were busy fighting fires at two apartment buildings before dawn Friday. One of the fires is considered suspicious.

The first fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. at South Pinecrest and Countryside, close to Harry and Oliver. Crews found flames shooting from a door at a four-plex. They brought it under control quickly.

With no one living at the building and no utilities connected, firefighters think someone may have tried to set it on fire intentionally. Security personnel kept watch for several hours, as several buildings in the neighborhood are vacant.

The second fire developed shortly after 4:30 a.m. in the Windham Court Apartments, in the 300 block of South Tyler. The trouble developed on a second-flood balcony. Residents of one building evacuated themselves, with no one hurt.

Damage there is described as light, and residents were able to return to their homes by sunrise. The cause of that fire is under investigation.
