An autopsy is underway to determine the identity of a victim found after fire broke out inside a Derby home.

Crews responded to the scene near 87th St. South and Greenwich around 1:45 a.m. Monday. First responders found about half of the home on fire.

“We had to pull out because it was rapidly advancing through the structure,” said Chief Gary Curmode, Sedgwick County Fire Department.

Investigators later found a body inside the home. Officials said neighbors had reported that one person was possibly still inside. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

“We want to make sure there was no other people visiting this occupant there,” Curmode said.

But Kay Barker believes it was her friend, the homeowner, who died.

"When I saw the dogs were loose I thought she's got to be in there and I saw her car in the driveway,” Barker said. “She wouldn't have left and gone somewhere without the dogs."

The home and contents are a total loss. A cause has not yet been determined.
