Cadaver dogs are searching the smoldering remains of a Kansas City restaurant that burned to the ground following a gas explosion and massive blaze, a fire official says.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James told KMBC that a woman remains missing and a man, who was believed to be missing, was located at a hospital Tuesday night.

The gas explosion occurred just after 6 p.m. and the resulting fire completely destroyed JJ's restaurant. Officials say more than a dozen people were injured, with at least two reported in critical condition.

The cause of the blast remains under investigation; however, a city official earlier said it was believed to have been caused accidentally by a utility contractor.

Fire crews have brought the flames under control, following a fire and explosion near the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.

At least 14 people were injured in the explosion that happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. JJ's Restaurant near 48th Street and Belleview Avenue was completely destroyed in the explosion that appears to have been caused by a gas leak that ignited.

KMBC-TV reports that firefighters and representatives from Missouri Gas Energy were inside the restaurant looking for the source of a gas leak at the time of the explosion. Customers were asked to leave, but there may have been as many as 10 employees inside at the time.

There is no word on any deaths, but at least 3 people suffered critical injuries. KMBC says early reports indicate a contractor may have ruptured a natural gas line while working in the area.

The fire continues to burn near the Plaza in Kansas City as crews from as far away as Johnson County in Kansas responded to the scene.

KMBC reports that at least five people are being treated at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Their current conditions are unknown. Five others are being treated at St. Luke's Hospital.

Authorities say the majority of the injuries are from lacerations. James Armer tells KMBC he was about a mile and a half away at the time and heard the explosion.

He said he saw debris flying about 100 feet into the air. Another witness reported smelling gas in the area prior to the explosion.

Firefighters are fearful of additional explosions as the work the bring the fires under control. Kansas City Mayor Sly James is urging residents to stay clear of the area.

Firefighters from across the Kansas City metro area are on the scene of a massive fire near the Plaza.

It began around 6 o'clock Tuesday evening at JJ's Restaurant near 48th Street and Belleview Avenue. KMBC reports that an explosion was heard from blocks away.

Moments later, the restaurant was engulfed in flames. There a preliminary reports of injuries, but no reports of any deaths.

The restaurant's website says it has been in business for 27 years and is listed by Zagaats as "one of the top restaurants in the Midwest."
