WICHITA, Kan. - A man tried to hold up a southeast Wichita convenience store Thursday night but left injured after the clerk threw him out.
Wichita Police say a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun entered the Jump Start store at Pawnee and Victoria around 11:30 p.m.
He pointed the gun at the 23-year-old woman behind the counter and demanded money from the register. She began to comply, then he told her to get the money from the safe too.
The clerk thought she saw an orange tip on the weapon, and assumed it was a toy gun. She then took it from him and hit him over the head with it.
Police say she fought with the suspect for several minutes, then threw him out of the store.
She called 911 and as officers processed the scene, dispatchers took another call. This time it was a woman reporting that her boyfriend had been assaulted.
Other officers responded to the the home in the 2600 block of South Lulu, and determined the 'victim' in that case was the suspect in the attempted robbery of the store. They also found a real firearm in the home, but aren't sure if it was used in the crime.
They arrested the 28-year-old man and took him to jail. Both he and the clerk had suffered minor injuries.
