KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMBC) — A shooting at an east Kansas City gas station has left a man dead and his 10-year-old son paralyzed.
Kansas City police said they were called to the gas station at 4501 Cleveland Ave. at 10:09 p.m. Friday.
Officers said the driver of a car in the parking lot had been shot to death. He was identified Kavyea Curry, 34. Curry's son, who was sitting in the front seat, was also shot and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. A 5-year-old boy in the back seat was not hurt.
"The lone shooter approached the victim’s driver’s side window on foot and shot several times through the window, striking both the victim and his son," police Capt. Tye Grant said in a news release.
Police said the boy, who is a third-grader, is stable at a hospital, but he is paralyzed from the chest down due to spinal damage.
Witnesses told detectives that they saw a man run from the area after the shooting. Another neighbor said an SUV was also at the scene.
"There was a dark-colored Suburban, like, going as slow as he was walking, like they knew each other and was talking," said neighbor Mary Antonio. "And the Suburban took off and he started running again,"
She said she wants the person who did this caught.
"That's why I'm willing to talk," said Antonio. "I think that people that know anything should come forward because that little boy suffered."
Police said there were several other people who witnessed the shooting, but they left before investigators got to the scene.
Police released six seconds of surveillance video showing Curry walking to his car with the children just before the shooting. Surveillance video also showed Curry inside the store talking to someone on a cellphone moments before he was shot.
