UPDATE: Monday, June 24, 2013

Six school board members unanimously decided to move forward with building a new school at 127th St. East and Pawnee and relocating the Southeast High School program to that building.

Construction will take 34 months. At the earliest, officials said it would be 2016 before Southeast could be relocated.

Wichita Schools' Board of Education decided the fate of Southeast High School at tonight's meeting. The board members chose one of three options.

The first option would expand and renovate the current school, located at the corner of Lincoln and Edgemoor. The estimated cost for land acquisition, demolition, and construction is $13.85 million.

The second option would create a new, 1,800-student building on district land at the corner of 127th St. East and Pawnee. With this option, Southeast High School would relocate to the new building and the old building would be re-purposed and used by either the school district or other organizations. The estimated cost for the Southeast Quadrant High School is $54 million.

Wichita Area Technical has shown an interest in moving some programs to the building at Lincoln and Edgemoor. Superintendent John Allison said the board could consider relocating the Alvin Morris Administrative Center and the Focht Instructional Support Center to the current Southeast, as well as WATC programs.

The third option would renovate the current school and build a new 800-student high school, which was proposed in the original bond plan. The total estimated cost is $56.35 million.

While there is sufficient bond issue money to build both facilities, cuts in education funding from the State of Kansas means that operating both the current school as well as the new school would be impossible without making cuts to other high schools.

Board member Barbara Fuller was absent at tonight's meeting.
