WICHITA, Kan. -- Some Wichita students may have been very unhappy to learn Thursday it will be back to school Friday, ending a three-day break brought on by this week's winter storm.

However, snow days are no vacation for some district employees.

"We've got facilities ready to go and I'm sure the kids are anxious to get back to school," said Julie Hedrick, USD 259 Division Director of Facilities.

Even if kids are not anxious to head back to school, the facilities division for Wichita public schools wasted no time clearing snow from school sidewalks and parking lots. Most school grounds were clear by Wednesday night after staff spent the entire day moving snow.

"They reported to the school service center yesterday at 5 a.m. and worked for 12 hours moving snow," Hedrick said.

Getting all of that snow out of the way took 80 facilities division employees and then some, Hedrick said.

"We also have custodial staff at each of the building sites that also work on removing the snow and getting the sites ready for kids and staff to come back to school," she said.

In announcing the return to school, USD 259 said there will likely be delays for students who ride the bus to school.
