WICHITA, Kan. — A woman's house and car were damaged last night after someone threw an exploding mortar.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of South Belmont.
According to police, the 32-year-old woman heard a bang and saw a white flash before a grass fire started. The fire spread to her house and car before firefighters extinguished it.
Investigators connected the fire to an exploding mortar shell that had been thrown toward the house. Some witnesses reported seeing a white Ford pickup truck driving away erratically right after the explosion.
Around 3 a.m., the same woman called 911 saying she saw suspects outside her home shooting fireworks. They left in a silver Dodge pickup truck.
She told police that her house was also targeted in a 2012 drive-by shooting, and she believes this is connected. Police are investigating.
