Emporia man dies in crash during police chase

EMPORIA, Kan. -- A man is dead after crashing during a police chase early Sunday morning in Emporia.

It began around 2:30 a.m. when officers attempted to stop a Chevy Cavalier for running a stop sign at 9th Avenue and Commercial Street.

The driver didn’t stop and led officers on a chase, which ended when the driver crashed into a power pole ten blocks away at 9th and Cottonwood.

The driver was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police identify him as 20-year-old Javier Escobedo of Emporia.
