WICHITA, Kan. - Government offices across Kansas are closed to mark Memorial Day. But in this election year, there could be some politics mixed in with the ceremonies.
A holiday service is planned at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, 12100 East 13th St. N. We know this because of the guest speaker - the main Democrat running for Governor. House Minority Leader Paul Davis promoted the appearance in a news release on campaign letterhead.
Davis also plans a stop at the Derby American Legion post. If incumbent Sam Brownback has a similar trip planned, it's not showing on his campaign website.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Winn also is coming to Wichita today. But her schedule indicates she'll only be hanging signs, as opposed to giving speeches.
In other Memorial Day activities across KAKEland:
+ A service is planned at 8:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, near downtown Wichita.
+ Republican Sen. Jerry Moran will speak at Wichita Eastview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
+ the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Dodge will have its own program at 11:00 a.m.
