What started as an everyday patrol down an alley in west El Dorado, ended with an officer saving a man's life in his backyard.
Just before 11:30 Tuesday morning, Officer Sam Humig was on patrol.
When he stopped in an alley that is not often traveled, neighbors became curious. Many of them headed outdoors to see if something was wrong, including 83-year-old Jim Barr.
"I was standing outside my car, about right here when he came out, and I walked toward the fence to say hi, and he took a few steps and fell," said Officer Humig.
Officer Humig and his cadet jumped the fence surrounding Barr's backyard to check on him.
When he didn't respond, they called 911.
"His eyes shut, and his head went limp, and his heart stopped beating. So, we laid him down and started CPR," said Officer Humig.
Officer Humig revived Barr, helping him to breathe again, just moments after he suffered a heart attack.
"He helped someone in distress, by saving this gentleman's life through his quick actions. He gave him back something that we can't put a price on," said Chief Tom Boren.
Those quick actions helped make Officer Humig receive a life saving medal, one he says he's humbled to have.
"I was just doing my job."
That job put him in the right place, at the right time, enabling him to save Jim Barr's life.
"I'm sure we'd all be going to a funeral. It's just a stroke of luck. The good Lord must have been looking down on him," said Barb Trent, Barr's neighbor.
Barr remains in a hospital in Andover. Friends and family say he continues to recover.
