EL DORADO, Kan.--- The El Dorado city commission passed an ordinance that prohibits smoking near fields and in the stands at outdoor youth recreational facilities.

"We're not prohibiting it. We're just limiting where it takes place," said Kevin Wishart, director of parks and recreation.

The code previously allowed smoking near youth. Now, it will only allow smoking in the parking lot areas.

"The purpose of the ordinance is to promote healthy lifestyles to our youth participating in our youth sports activities. We've had several complaints over the last few years from parents, spectators, about smoking in the bleachers, near the dugouts," said Wishart.

He also said that the ordinance does not affect people who rent the city's facilities or sporting events for adults.

Site supervisors and staff will enforce the ordinance.
