Dozens Ride Out Tornado Outbreak In Kansas Turnpike Shelters

Dozens of drivers sought shelter from Saturday's tornado outbreaks in storm shelters along the Kansas Turnpike. A Kansas Turnpike spokesperson said 70 customers and toll collectors spent time in the shelters stretching from Emporia to the southern turnpike terminal.

People spent time in the shelters between 9:30 p.m. and 11:45 p.m.

Dozens also sought shelter in the service areas at Belle Plaine, Towanda, & Matfield Green.

The Kansas Turnpike has 28 shelters along the route, at toll booths or service areas. News outlets, including KAKE News, recently aired stories about the shelters and their availability.
