Donations are already pouring in to replace the burned playground in Winfield. As we've been tracking for days now, the city's coveted Island Park suspiciously burned to the ground for the second time in four years.

Dom Newbecker came to the park to play, although he knew about the fire. Instead, he and a friend fed the ducks and geese.

"It makes me sad because all the money they put up and all the hard work everybody did for us children," said Newbecker.

The good news is... the park was fully insured. Therefore, the city is not asking for donations. however, Winfield City Manager Warren Porter says that hasn't stopped people from giving money anyway.

"We don't believe that we're going to need additional money to rebuild what was there before," Porter said, "but we've had people already giving us money because they want to be part of the process to rebuild the playground and Island Park."

As for the investigation, the fire and police departments are tracking down more than a dozen tips phoned into Crime Stoppers.

"It's going about as expected," said Winfield Fire Investigator Patrick Ramirez. "We're only a couple days into it, so we're still very busy. Still a lot of phone calls, a lot of follow up."

Although the Winfield Fire Department is still hesitant to call the case arson, they say it's highly unlikely the fire was accidental. If you have any information, you can call Winfield/Cowley County Crime Stoppers at (620) 221-5555.
