Pastors and counselors visited Dighton High School Monday to help students deal with their grief over the loss of a fellow student in an accident Friday night near Hays.
16 year-old Hope James was killed when the SUV she was riding in crashed after the driver swerved to avoid a deer. Hope, along with three other teens and an adult were driving to a school band workshop in Manhattan, according to Dighton Superintendent Joel Applegate.
Applegate says the other students and the adult injured in the crash have all returned home.

A 16-year-old girl from Dighton was killed when a vehicle she was riding in rolled over along Interstate 70 near Hays.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2004 GMC Yukon was eastbound on I-70 when the 28-year-old male driver swerved to miss a deer. The vehicle hit the deer, drove off the shoulder, over corrected and rolled, the KHP accident report said. The vehicle landed on its top.
Hope James, 16, died at the scene. The driver, Christopher Johnson, also of Dighton, and three other teenage passengers -- 17-year-old Wyatt Marsteller and 15-year-old Ieasha Gray of Dighton and 15-year-old Rebecca Harmison of Garden City -- were hurt. They were all taken to Hays Medical Center. Their conditions are unknown.
