A paraprofessional in the Derby School District has been fired after a serious child sex crime allegation. Up until last week, Alfred Rocheleau was employed at Derby Hills Elementary School.

According to administration, Rocheleau was terminated when police came forward with this information.

One parent who declined to go on camera Monday said she was still trying to get her mind wrapped around exactly what has happened. Police charged Rocheleau, 70, with this very serious sex crime on Friday.

Another parent said she felt the school handled the situation well.

"We love this school," said Shawna Richards. "I couldn't imagine my kids going anywhere else."

70 year-old Alfred Rocheleau has been employed as a paraprofessional at Derby Hills for the last three years. Two weeks ago, police notified the Derby administration that they were investigating the case.

"At that time, we terminated his employment with us," said Derby Schools Superintendent Craig Wilford. "Then this past week, it's my understanding that he was charged. It's also my understanding that the incidents did not have anything to do with our schools."

Friday, Rocheleau was charged in Sedgwick County District Court with aggravated indecent liberties with a 4 year-old child. The criminal complaint alleges the crime happened on or between December of 2010 and September of 2011. Administration mailed a letter to parents and posted notification on their website Monday morning.

Many parents at the school on Monday were reluctant to talk, but some say they are clearly struggling with this notion.

"I think the school handled it remarkably by letting us know," Richards said. "We talked to one teacher and she was very concerned. They even came in and took care of it on a Saturday."

KAKE News attempted to contact Rocheleau Monday at his home near 39th Street South and Rock Rd. However, nobody answered the door. He was jailed on Friday and posted bond that day.

"We always want to make sure our children are safe and that's why we're working hand-in-hand with law enforcement to gather information that they need, as well as keeping open communication with our parents," Superintendent Wilford said.

Al Rocheleau's preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for February 9. However, it is not unusual for hearings in cases such as this to be delayed.
