The man accused of killing a Derby mother and stabbing her teenage son earlier this week was charged today with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Charles Alfred Beck, Jr., 40, is accused of strangling Lonnie Staggs and attempting to strangle and then stabbing her 15-year-old son, Nathan, court documents said. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 19.
Police were originally called to a disturbance just before 10 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of North Nixon Street, near K-15 and 71st Street South.
The mother was taken to a Wichita hospital in extremely critical condition where she later died. Her son was released after being treated for a stab wound to the neck.
Beck was arrested Sunday evening in Houston County, Missouri.
