WICHITA, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office is recognizing three deputies for helping a family that was living in a car.
On Tuesday, August 19, deputies were dispatched to check the welfare of several people who appeared to be living in a car. They arrived and spoke to the family, and learned that were from out of state.
One of the family members was in town for a job interview that ended up falling through. That person was able to find another job, but would not be paid for three more days - which meant they had to live in the vehicle for the rest of the week.
Three deputies contacted area shelters, but no beds were available. They then pooled their money together and found a hotel that would provide the family a room until last Friday. They also gave the family a Walmart gift card to be used for food.
The deputies asked not to be identified, saying that recognition was not their motivation.
