Construction companies and crews are on high alert after crooks stole thousands of dollars in tools.

The thief cut through the fence at Wildcat Construction. Once inside, he stole more than $12,000 worth of tools and equipment out of a trailer.

"It's sickening,” said Michael Voegel of Wildcat. “We're self insured that comes out of the bottom line and affects the profits for the whole company."

It was one of the trailers in southeast Wichita that Wildcat takes out on job sites. The thief slowed down crews while the company worked to replace everything that was taken.

Just across the street, it was one thief who hit Decker Electric. Security cameras captured him walking back and forth and then finally breaking into a truck and trailer.

"He was here about two hours, walked around the lot didn't care about cameras,” said Stephen Decker of Decker Electric.

The man took about $10,000 worth of tools.

"You do feel kind of violated," Decker said.

Police records show that in 2012, there were 219 trailers stolen or broken into. And already since the first of this year, crooks have hit at least seven different times, taking tools, equipment and the trailers themselves.

As for Wildcat Construction, the owners are putting up more security cameras, and they've moved their trailers to a more secure location.
