WICHITA, Kan. -- Crews battled a fire early Sunday morning at an abandoned motel in west Wichita.
The fire was reported just after midnight. When crews arrived in the 7500 block of West Taft, they found smoke and flames emanating from the abandoned two-story building.
A total of nine fire crews were on scene. Capt. Robert Dusenbery said it took them about 15 minutes to contain the fire, which started on the first floor. But they did face a few challenges, he said.
"We had to get past the debris just to get in the door, force the door open,” Capt. Dusenbery said. “The hallway was completely covered -- still a lot of furniture and things. So anything we have to get over and around makes it tougher."
No injuries were reported. One room was destroyed, and at least two others were damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
