TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Authorities are investigating a North Topeka car accident that killed one person and put another in the hospital with serious injuries.
Shawnee County dispatch says neighbors near the 5200 block of NW Rochester Road called in the crash shortly after 8:00 p.m. Sunday night.
The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office says that the four-door car was heading South on N.W. Rochester Rd. when it left the roadway, hit a tree and burst into flames.
They say one person was found outside the vehicle when deputies arrived. He was to taken to Stormont-Vail with serious injuries.
The Sheriff's Office said the other person, believed to be driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both are believed to be teenagers.
They said a preliminary investigation indicates that speed may have been a contributing factor to the crash and it is unknown if either occupant was wearing a seat belt.
The identities of both the driver and passenger have not been released.
