UPDATE: Friday, May 18, 2012

Council Grove officials say Zebra Mussels that caused water restrictions last week have been removed from the city lake.

Derrick Craige, Water Superintendent, said crews cleaned removed all Zebra Mussels from the raw water intake tower at the Council Grove City Lake.

Craige said the Zebra Mussels caused a blockage of the 16” outlet pipe was due to buildup of sludge that had settled into the bottom of the intake tower.

Engineers are currently working on cost effective solutions to deter any future zebra mussel growth inside the intake water tower as well as the gravity flow water supply line to Council Grove, Craige said.

UPDATE: Saturday, May 12, 2012

As of 8:00 a.m., Council Grove Water Superintendent Derrick Craige lifted the stage four water restrictions that were placed on water consumers late Thursday afternoon.

Water Department crews worked continuously until 1:30 a.m. this morning. A temporary bypass was installed around the restricted area at the water intake tower at the Council Grove City Lake, returning Council Grove’s water distribution systems back to normal.

Divers arriving today will dive and begin inspections of the intake tower to determine the exact cause and location of the blockage. Once the blockage is located, water department crews will then begin work to clear the obstruction.

WIBW in Topeka originally reported on Thursday that Council Grove's City Administration said zebra mussels, which are fresh water mollusks, were clogging the intake from the lake and that the tower was nearly dry.
