The Wichita City Council is considering future water rates after passing a rate increase for 2012.

Public Works Director Alan King and the department presented several scenarios to the council during a workshop Tuesday morning. The proposed increases for the next 10 years range from nothing to a 21-percent increase for 2013 with a major drop off over the next several years.

One of the biggest problems city leaders face is a federal mandate to continue cleaning the water being dumped into the Arkansas River. Projected cleanup could cost the city $141 million in a worst case scenario. That project would mean water rates would have to be increased more than expected.

The council will consider all of the scenarios before voting later this year.
