The Christmas season is getting off to a bad start for one Wichita family. A young girl is devastated after a grinch stole all of the inflatable Christmas decorations from her front yard. The family now hopes to catch the thieves who destroyed their holiday spirit.
"The penguins were here. Big Santa on a motorcycle over here," Stacy Patterson explains as she walks through her now empty front yard near 21st & Hyacinth in Northwest Wichita.
Little Skyler Barnes has just been brought home from school so her mother could break the news to her that the Christmas inflatables she loved so much had been stolen.
"We were gonna put a bunch of them up and we had a ton and it was going to be really pretty," little Skylar said through tears.
"Some might think that this is just a material thing, but to a child, they don't see it that way," Stacy said. "To her, it was Christmas and all the joys of Christmas."
Skylar and her mother Stacy are both devastated, actually. After buying their dream home two months ago, The Pattersons were looking forward to decorating for Christmas, but when they woke up and found the inflatables stolen, 8-year-old Skylar couldn't understand.
"I really want to say to whoever did this... shame on you," said Patterson. "We have a little girl's heart that's broken and this is very hard for me."
Patterson admits she wrote a sign in anger and placed it in her front yard in hopes the thieves will see it. But she also wants the neighborhood to know about the theft.
"Children don't have the capacity to understand the world we live in, Patterson said. "Now she's learning and this is obviously a hard lesson she's having to learn sooner that I wanted her to."
