WICHITA, Kan. — Murder charges are expected to be filed against a mother and her boyfriend following the death of a young girl.

Monica Krueger, 24, and 23-year-old Evan Schuessler are now facing felony first degree murder charges in the death of 3-year-old Emma Krueger, who died last night.

According to Wichita Police Lt. Todd Ojile, the child wasn't breathing when a 911 call came in Monday night. She was taken by EMS from an apartment complex on South Hydraulic to Wesley in what police described as grave condition. The little girl was suffering from head injuries and other bruising, and hospital staff soon called police.

Homicide and EMCU detectives arrived and began speaking with the girl's mother and her boyfriend. They were soon taken to police headquarters to be interviewed, where they were later arrested and booked on child abuse charges.

Emma died around 7:30 Wednesday night. Detectives then went back to the jail and re-booked Krueger and Schuessler, this time for felony first degree murder.

Lt. Ojile said Krueger, her daughter and Schuessler had lived at the Falcon Pointe apartment complex for about three months, but contrary to other reports, there had been no previous 911 calls reporting abuse. He said the investigation revealed Emma had been abused for about one month.

He went on to say that working these cases is very difficult, as children have no way to defend themselves.

Although they've been booked for murder, formal charges have not yet been filed. The police department is expected to present their case to the district attorney's office on Friday.

Previous Story:

Police are investigating a suspected case of child abuse after a young girl was seriously injured earlier this week.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Monday night, paramedics brought a three-year-old girl to a local hospital. She was suffering from several injuries, and hospital staff called police around soon after.

Police reports show the little girl has bruising to her body and swelling on the brain. Wednesday, she's still hospitalized in what police describe as "very critical condition."

Police say the ambulance brought the child to the hospital from the Falcon Pointe Apartments, located in the 4200 block of South Hydraulic. Officers were on scene for several hours last night into the morning gathering evidence.

According to Lt. Dan East, officers have since arrested the girl's 24-year-old mother and her 23-year-old boyfriend. Records indicate that they are Monica Krueger and Evan Schuessler. Formal charges could be filed later this week.
