A child is hospitalized after being hit by a car late Monday afternoon in Arkansas City.

Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the 1100 block of North 1st Street where a 3-year-old had been struck by an SUV. When emergency crews arrived, they found that the child had already been taken to an area hospital by private vehicle. The driver of the SUV was still on scene.

Investigators say the boy stepped into traffic as the SUV was passing, and was struck. The driver cooperated with authorities, and was released after being cited for an expired driver's license and no proof of insurance.

After being taken to a nearby hospital, the child was airlifted to Wichita for further treatment. He is currently in ICU undergoing treatment for a fractured right leg, injuries to his right foot and major dental damage. He's scheduled for surgery this morning.

Police are still investigating.
