UPDATE: Thursday, September 20, 2012
A 3-year-old boy is safe at home after he was found wandering alone in a southeast Wichita neighborhood early Thursday morning.
Two young women driving near Mt. Vernon and Beech, which is just northwest of Harry and Webb Road, noticed the boy about 4:20 a.m., stopped and called 911.
Police say the boy simply got out of bed in the middle of the night and somehow got out of the house.
The women who stopped to help the boy told 911 dispatchers and police they were not able to understand the child when they asked him his name.
"The child was young enough that when this good Samaritan asked name and address, the child was unable to provide any real information to say where he had come from," said Wichita Police Lt. Doug Nolte.
The child did not have any injuries and police arrived within minutes of the 911 call.
"They (the officers) thought there was probably a chance that the child had wandered out of a home, so they began to knock on doors in that neighborhood," Nolte said.
However, that check of the neighborhood did not reveal where the boy was supposed to be. That remained a mystery until about 9 a.m., when another 911 caller reported a child had wandered away from a home in the area sometime during the night.
"The child was staying at a daycare provider that was providing overnight care because the parent of the child worked overnight," Nolte said.
He said sometime after the child care provider went to sleep, the child got up and left the house.
"A 3-year-old does have mobility and, unfortunately, could get out," Nolte said. "It's a reminder for parents to make sure they are locking their doors."
Nolte did not know whether the door of the home where the boy had been was locked or unlocked.
Lt. Jeffery Weible of the Missing and Exploited Child Unit said the case is not considered a criminal matter and police do not suspect any child neglect.
