After a McPherson pet shop owner passed away this week, the question of where her breeder dogs where going to go was still unanswered; until now. After a collaboration of the owner’s surviving husband, a local veterinarian, and Kevin Stubbs, Executive Director of Caring Hands, it has been decided that 10 of the 40 breeding dogs will come to CHHS to find their new, forever homes.

This situation is one that many surviving spouses and family members find themselves in when a loved one has not made provisions for animals that will be left behind. It’s also a situation that can be avoided with planning, discussion, and simple arrangements being made beforehand.

“People often forget about their pets when making their arrangements for after they’ve passed,” said Stubbs. “It’s very simple to do and it’s something we can help with if people are unsure of what to do or where to turn for that kind of information.”

This is the second time already this year that CHHS has opened its doors to animals with no place else to go. The first happened earlier this year after a state seizure of animals being kept in poor conditions. All of those animals where successfully rehomed, and it is hopeful the same will happen in this case. The remaining 30 breeder dogs are being taken in by other shelters and individuals.

It is anticipated that CHHS will receive a combination of Japanese Chin, Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, and Pompoo (Pomeranian Poodle mix) breeds; each breed very popular among breeders and adopters. Each dog will be medically examined, vaccinated, undergo a behavior assessment, and be altered and microchipped upon adoption.

Anyone interested in adopting may visit the animals starting Thursday, April 26th and adoption fees will vary. Precedence will be given to application filled out in person.
