Kansas City police say a school bus was involved in a hit-and-run crash Thursday afternoon on the city’s southeast side.

The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. near 67th Street and Askew Avenue and left the bus on its side, KMBC reports.

Six students from Success Academy at Knotts were on the bus along with one adult. No serious injuries were reported.

One boy said he climbed out of the roof of the bus after the crash and had a small cut on his forehead.

Investigators said the driver of another car involved in the wreck ran away from the scene. Witnesses said he was black, in his 30s, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black and blue shoes and may have had blood on his face from the crash.

Downed power lines at the crash scene knocked out service to about 660 customers.

Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent Stephen Green said he rushed to the scene as soon as he heard about it and that he is grateful that the situation wasn't worse.

"The main thing is the safety of our children," he said.
