Burrton High School students got a surprise after lunch, as three of their peers took part in a mock car crash.
"I just don't want it to happen like it did happen today, with the whole accident and then someone actually dying from that accident. So, I just wanted to affect them positively and make sure they don't do it," said Miranda Day, a senior who helped organize the simulation.
The reenactment showed three high school students who were involved in a car crash without seat belts. The driver was texting and driving and caused an accident that killed one of the passengers. The other passenger was trapped inside the car and had to be air lifted to a hospital.
"It is realistic because that can happen. All those injuries and stuff, that does really happen, like broken bones and flying out the windshield," said Ruben Flores, a junior who helped organize the simulation.
There were several lessons that volunteers tried to teach students through the graphic reenactment.
"Seat belts to driving under the influence to driving distracted, driving and texting, all of those factors were driven home in a graphic manner. In a way, it should really help the message stay in the forefront of their mind," said Cain Humphrey, paramedic.
The students also saw the coordinated efforts of law enforcement, firefighters, and paramedics at the scene of a crash.
