UPDATE: Friday, October 11, 2013
Police and fire officials are investigating after the body of a woman in her 70s was found in a Hutchinson home Thursday afternoon, the day after a fire that went unreported.
Police said a family member went to the house in the 100 block of West 19th Avenue to check on an elderly family member and noticed signs of fire damage. When crews arrived around 4 p.m., they found extensive fire damage and the woman's body inside.
Hutchinson police said the fire apparently happened and burned itself out sometime on Wednesday and that the woman likely died from smoke inhalation. An autopsy has been scheduled for today. Her name has not yet been released.
On Friday, investigators said they believe the fire was likely caused by a cigarette. Damage to the home is estimated at $40,000 to $50,000.
A fleeing motorist was arrested after driving into the scene in a case unrelated to the fire. Read that story here.
