Kansas voters may soon get to vote on lowering some property taxes.
Currently, Kansas taxes boat owners at 30%. The State Department of Revenue calls it extremely high. A Senate resolution in the state legislature would put a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would allow a change. Boat owners are hopeful.
"We've seen a lot of boats that are registered in Oklahoma, just to avoid the Kansas taxes," said boat owner and sailor Gene Nold. "So I know we are losing revenue and participants on the water because of the Kansas taxes."
The Department of Wildlife and Parks estimates about 10,000 boat owners register their water craft in other states to avoid the Kansas taxes.
