A teenager was seriously hurt in an accident Friday morning in southwest Wichita.

It happened shortly before 8 a.m. this morning on Interstate 235 just west of the I-135 southbound junction.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the driver of a GMC Envoy heading northbound on I-235 lost control, slid off the road and hit a guardrail in the median. The SUV then crossed the southbound lanes of traffic, struck the bridge guardrail on the outside shoulder and was then hit by a Chevrolet pickup.

A 17-year-old girl was a passenger in the SUV, and had to extricated by firefighters. The teen, identified as Carmen A. Mann of Wichita, was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries. She is currently listed in critical condition.

The SUV's driver, 48-year-old David M. Mann of Wichita, was also injured and is currently listed in fair condition.

A 28-year-old Wichita man was driving the pickup. He was also hurt but has since been treated at a local hospital and released.

The southbound lanes of I-235 were closed while crews worked the accident, but opened completely late Friday morning.

Officials are working to determine what caused the driver to cross over into oncoming traffic.
