Spirit AeroSystems today announced additional workforce reductions in Wichita will begin next month.

In a news release, Spirit said reductions will be accomplished through a voluntary retirement program, a voluntary layoff program and a layoff of management and salaried employees.

“Spirit is balancing our workforce and will continue to hire hourly workers in the factory and other critical skills to support rate and customer demand," said Communications Manager Ken Evans. "Reduction announcements made today and in July are designed to reduce overhead costs so the company can operate more efficiently.”

Final numbers of employees impacted have not yet been determined.

"The actions are the result of an ongoing workforce assessment designed to balance the workforce, reduce overhead costs, increase efficiency and drive improved performance," the news release said.

The company will offer a lump sum severance payment and career transition services to employees who are laid off, and a lump sum severance payment and healthcare bridging option to employees who are eligible for the voluntary retirement program.

SPEEA Midwest Executive Director Bob Brewer said the union is issuing a demand to bargain letter because the company didn't notify SPEEA about the voluntary layoff and retirement packages.

Spirit laid off more than 300 workers in late July.
