A man is being held in the Cowley County Jail, on charges of Battery - Domestic Violence, Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Threat and Criminal Restraint, following a brief standoff.

The Arkansas City Police Department says it began inside of a home on south Summit Street, shortly before 5:30 Saturday evening. Chief Sean Wallace says when police responded, the learned a woman inside of the home had been held against her will, and attacked multiple times over a 30 minute period.

The man had left and returned to his home in the 800 block of South A Street. Chief Wallace says while officers were present, the man sent threatening text messages to the woman, promising to pull a gun on the victim if she talked to police.

Police surrounded the man's home and ordered nearby residents to either evacuate or stay indoors while police attempted to make contact with the suspect. Chief Wallace says at first the man wouldn't comply but did allow two children to leave the home.

The suspect eventually surrendered and was taken to the Cowley County Jail where he is being held on $4250 bond. Two guns were also removed from the home.

KAKE News is withholding the man's name until he has been formally charged.
