Animal Control Officers Stretched Thin

Wichita, Kan-- It's one call to another for Animal Control Officer Manual Meraz.. He's been covering the entire city of Wichita alone all morning.

"We have 16 officers covering 400,000 people," Director of Animal Control Dennis Graves.

Animal control field between 25,000 and 30,000 thousand calls a year. As the temperatures rise, so do the number of calls.

Today there are 200 backlogged calls including 34 strays, 7 dog bites and 60 open cases of neglect. The police department is doing a comprehensive study of animal control to make sure its officers can get to the calls quickly.
