A man is behind bars in Cowley County, accused of burglary, driving under the influence and other charges after a brief chase in Arkansas City.
It happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the west side of Arkansas City in the 200 block of North 8th Street. Police Chief Sean Wallace says an officer in the area saw a car recklessly pull out of the drive of a vacant home. As it did, a large shop vac fell out of the trunk.
The officer tried pulling the car over, but the driver refused to stop. A short chase began, but ended when the driver crashed into a gate located along West Chestnut Avenue.
The driver tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. Chief Wallace says officers discovered that the suspect, Juan Diego-Lopez Cruz, had been drinking alcohol and was driving on a suspended license. Stolen items that had been taken from the residence Lopez was leaving were found inside of the car.
Lopez was booked into the Cowley County jail on charges of burglary, felony theft, reckless driving, elude police in a vehicle, obstruct apprehension, driving while suspended, DUI, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, transporting an open container, and fail to comply with a lawful order.
He's being held on a $11,600 bond.
