UPDATE: Thursday, June 21, 2012
A Sedgwick County Sheriff Deputy Recruit is expected to recover after an accidental shooting at a southwest firearms range.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Firearms Training Range, 24532 W 39th St S., around 10 a.m. Thursday.
The sheriff's department said a bullet struck the metal frame of the target system and ricocheted, hitting the deputy in the right thigh. The 26-year-old man was transported to a Wichita hospital for treatment.
"It was an entry wound in his thigh," said Sgt. Mike McGee. "I'm not sure where the bullet impacted to make it come back, other than in the bracketry system."
The current target system at the county's firing range is 18 years olf and is scheduled to be replaced next month. The deputy was treated for minor injuries and released. He returned to the range to continue training.
No one else was hurt.
