Kansas health officials are warning people to avoid contact with water in two lakes because of toxic blue-green algae blooms.

Kansas health officials are warning people to avoid contact with water in two lakes because of toxic blue-green algae blooms.
The Department of Health and Environment says the warnings cover Centralia City Lake in Nemaha (NEE'-muh-hah) County and Lowell Reservoir in Jewell County, until further notice.
People should avoid ingesting the water, or swimming or wading. They also should not let pets come in contact with the water, and they should avoid eating fish or shellfish from the two lakes.
The department says blue-green algae are found in most surface waters but in heavy concentrations form blooms, which release toxins. The blooms often resemble green paint floating on the water, and they can produce an unpleasant smell.
