Police in a northeast Kansas county are looking into several cases of thieves making off with tailgates from pickup trucks.

At least three pickup owners have had their tailgates ripped off just this month in the Johnson County town of Shawnee, in the Kansas City metro area. Overland Park police told KCTV they've had two cases.

Shawnee police say the crimes have happened in different parts of the city, on various makes and models of pickups. They're not sure why someone would steal a tailgate, but they speculate the thieves are taking them as replacement parts or scrap metal.

One pickup owner says he's putting off replacing his missing tailgate, figuring it's going to cost $900 to have a new one installed and painted to match his truck.
