Labor organizers seeking a higher minimum wage are focusing their efforts on Wichita. They want the city to pass a minimum wage ordinance.
Their "Raise the Wage, Wichita" campaign kicked off during the Labor
Day weekend. The ordinance would be the first in Kansas. And it would put Wichita in the company of only a handful of cities with similar
laws.
The minimum wage in Kansas is $2.65 an hour. It has stayed the same for 20 years and has fallen to the lowest in the nation.
Labor organizers, for years, have failed to get Kansas lawmakers to support a minimum wage increase. Lawmakers are concerned about
the effect the increase could have on small businesses.
San Francisco and Washington, D.C. are among the U-S cities with
minimum wage laws.
