A former receptionist has testified that patients at a Kansas clinic linked by authorities to 68 painkiller overdose deaths kept getting prescriptions after a physician assistant tried to cut them off because of drug abuse.

Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, who is a nurse, are on trial in federal court in Wichita charged with writing unlawful prescriptions, fraud and money laundering at their Haysville clinic.

Jennifer Harry testified Thursday that Linda Schneider reinstated the prescriptions for a woman whose medications had been cut off for drug abuse. Harry said Linda Schneider told her she reinstated the prescription because the patient paid cash.

But defense attorney Lawrence Williamson tried to cast doubt on the testimony by showing jurors that the woman's prescriptions were paid by Medicaid.
