UPDATE

The Wellington man whose car careened down an embankment and into a lagoon in northern Sumner County Thursday has died.

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Joseph Edgerton, 53, of Wellington, was driving southbound on the Kansas Turnpike Thursday when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and careened down an embankment at 119th Street South flipping end over end and landing in a sewer lagoon, according to Fire Captain Lowell Ester, Mulvane Emergency Services.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers arriving first on the scene, jumped into the contaminated water to pull the driver out of the vehicle which was upside down in the lagoon.

The man was not breathing when he was removed from the vehicle and troopers continued CPR until the Mulvane Emergency Services took over the patient, transporting him to a local hospital. Crews winched the car the rest of the way out of the water, finding no other occupant in the vehicle.
