The Sedgwick County Commission voted 3-2 to transfer $1.6 million from the arena fund to the county’s general fund.

The money will reimburse the county for workers staffed behind the scenes at the arena.

In 2004, taxpayers voted in favor of a one cent sales tax for the building of the Intrust Bank Arena and for repairs to the Coliseum and its pavilions.

Commissioners debated whether the $1.6 million should be paid from the general fund or from the arena fund. Commissioner Dave Unruh and Tim Norton said the money should come from the general fund because staff was doing its normal work and wasn't hired specifically for the arena.

Commissioners Karl Peterjohn, Kelly Parks and Gwen Welshiemer voted for the transfer saying they were keeping a promise to taxpayers that property taxes would not be used for the arena.
