After an executive session, commissioners voted to offer a settlement to the family of a man beaten at the Sedgwick County jail in 2007.

Edgar Richard was an inmate at the jail when he was reportedly beaten by a detention deputy. Former Detention Deputy Manual Diaz pleaded no contest to aggravated battery in the case and was eventually sentenced to probation.

Richard lost his battle to cancer in February. His family filed a civil suit on his behalf against the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department, claiming the deputy used excessive force.

The amount of the settlement was not disclosed.
